Strain Review: Platinum Jack, Shambhala Healing Center

While the legendary Jack Herer strain is widely known as a spicy sativa, Shambhala Healing Center’s Platinum Jack left us feeling more serene than stimulated.

It is unclear whether Platinum Jack is a particularly excellent cut of Jack Herer or a hybrid of Jack Herer and Platinum Kush. The more subdued effect of this particular sample could be due to the influence of Platinum Kush, or it could possibly be attributed to a high CBN content, possibly due to a late harvest.

Shambhala Healing Center stands out for being the only pharmacy in San Francisco to successfully defend itself during the federal crackdown that closed nearly a third of the city’s licensed cannabis clubs. After receiving a threatening letter from the local U.S. Attorney in 2012, Shambhala temporarily closed the shop window and went for delivery only and reopened six months later. Justice Department prosecutors responded by filing charges to seize the building, but a federal judge ultimately dismissed the case last December.

Shambhala is also known for its popular 4:20pm happy hour where customers can spin a wheel to win free flowers, concentrates or other prizes.

Potency: 27.1% THC (CBD, CBN unknown)

Appearance: These thick, bouncy flowers have a pale lemon-lime shade of green, with curled camel-colored pistils and a golden glow of amber-colored trichomes that leave a sticky residue on the fingertips.

Flavour: A burst of nose-tingling turpentine, tangy pine and milder fuel vapors hover over a concentrated sickly sweetness reminiscent of lime gelatin powder. Hints of oak, Parmesan and grapefruit add dimension to the strongly astringent stench.

Taste: The taste starts off light and woody, followed by a deluge of fizzy lime zest and a bittersweet splash of grapefruit. A sharp bite of acetone, spearmint and Splenda clings to the mouth and throat as traces of guava and toasted coconut emerge on the exhale.

Effect: A light-headed feeling provides a pleasant feeling of relaxed mood improvement and mental peace. Attention wanders, thoughts wander, and worries are washed away. The passage of time becomes incomprehensible as existence floats at a surrealistic distance. This Zen state of calm contentment gradually empties into melancholy indolence.

Medical Applicability: Typically, Jack Herer and related types provide cerebral stimulation and energetic euphoria that can help with depression or fatigue, as well as exacerbate anxiety. Our sample (be it due to Kush genetics or CBN) acts as a calming anxiety eraser, ideal for treating stress, tension, PMS or PTSD.

General impression: Sharp and powerful, these Platinum Jack flowers induce a quiet stillness rather than the quick boost we expected.
