Review: Cali Gold Sour Diesel Semi-Dark Chocolate Minis

The small progeny of the grown-up bar has everything you need (and maybe more).

Most of us have had a late night snack attack after ripping a bong, and the path from smoking weed to eating chocolate is pretty straight forward. In fact, I once broke my tooth on a frozen Twix bar because my appetite for the stuff was beyond my sanity and I didn’t wait long enough for it to soften.

It turns out that there is scientific evidence behind the complementary nature of cannabis and chocolate, and it has to do with two very similar compounds: THC and anandamide. We all know THC and its effects on the brain. But anandamide is a lesser-known lipid found in chocolate that is nearly identical to THC. Some scientists believe that anandamide can help CBD and THC stay in your body longer by inhibiting the breakdown of cannabinoids in these compounds. In other words, you’ll stay high longer if you mix the two.

I’m not a scientist, but I think the people behind these studies are onto something. And after eating a Cali Gold chocolate mini, I got high as hell.

The chocolates are hard, individually wrapped and about the size of a Jolly Rancher. Each small bar contains 53 percent cocoa and 32 mg of THC, which is quite high for such a small chocolate. Cali Gold also sells regular sized bars with 125mg and 250mg THC, which are available in flavors such as dark chocolate Himalayan sea salt and milk chocolate.

Cannabis infused chocolate is the only thing Cali Gold makes, and I think they have found their niche with success. In terms of taste, they have a great balance of cocoa and cannabis that doesn’t taste too cannabis-like and has just the right amount of sweetness.

I started with about a third of one of the small bars. I also have to say I ended up there as I got really stoned from that amount, which makes sense as 10mg of THC usually gets me pretty ripped. Not only did it feel stronger than other edibles I’ve eaten, the effects lasted longer. For those who use Cali Gold as a bona fide medicine, these will definitely work.

Although Sour Diesel is a hybrid, I found the high on this quite spicy and for a moment I got a little paranoid, which usually doesn’t happen when I stick to indica edibles (like the KIVA Blueberry Terra Bites for example). My other criticism of the product is that because of their thickness and hardness, it was difficult to cut off a piece with a utility knife without it flaking all over the place. However, if you have the tolerance I can imagine popping a whole one would be great as they taste really good.

The base: Each bar contains 32 mg of THC.

Appearance: Tiny little cubes of chocolate. Kudos to Cali Gold for their font choice and branding.

Taste: Cali Gold chocolate tastes just as good as any “artisan” chocolate on the market, and the hint of cannabis will give you a home run in your mouth.

Flavour: Pretty simple. They smell like chocolate and weed.

Medical Applicability: Given their potency, I think these would be good for treating any symptom you’d address with a sativa or sativa-dominant hybrid. They didn’t make me sit on the couch like an indica, and I experienced some paranoia. But I’m also a bit of a freak.

General impressions: A great cannabis confection that would fit discreetly in your purse or pocket. Solid taste, strong high and for some reason I just get a good vibe from Cali Gold as a company. This might just be because of their packaging, but hey, that’s how I feel.

Rating: 5/5
