My Canary app can help drivers avoid a DUI for marijuana

By Oscar Pascual |

Want to know if you’re too stoned to get behind the wheel? There’s an app for that.

The legalization attorneys at NORML have provided iPhone users with My Canary, an app that tests owners’ ability to drive through a series of tests on their balance, memory and perception of time. Tests include repeating disappearing numbers, standing on one leg, and even pressing a series of buttons in a “whack-a-mole” game to test reflexes.

“My Canary is the result of 60 years of combined technical and legal experience and thousands of peer-reviewed studies, including research from NASA, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), and DOD (US Department of Defense), as well as thousands of studies specific to for the acute impact of cannabis on cognitive and psychomotor functioning,” Canary developer Marc Silverman said in an interview with the Daily mail.

While classic alcohol breath testers can accurately detect whether or not a person is intoxicated, marijuana use poses a much more complicated challenge because it can be detected in the human system for up to a month after consumption. In addition, the psychological effects of THC can range from five to 24 hours, depending on the particular cannabis strain and personal tolerance to the drug.

“Identification of THC in blood is poorly associated with impaired user performance,” Leonard Frieling, a published author on the impact of marijuana on human functioning, told the Mail. “Canary is the first app to use performance science to help marijuana users consume more responsibly.”

The imprecise nature of determining a weed DUI is why the app developers also encourage users to test themselves while sober to give themselves a better idea of their capabilities when stoned.

“My Canary is the first app to give consumers the scientific information they need to honestly and accurately evaluate their personal performance – privately, anytime, anywhere,” NORML executive director Allen St. Pierre told the Mail.

My Canary is now available for purchase on the Apple App Store.
