Hydrology9 Evaporator

In the recent past, vaporizers have become akin to mousetraps: everyone is trying to build a better one. Most of the available models are difficult to distinguish from each other, as each company tries to leave its mark. Usually, these products only differ in minor nuances, such as a new grip, an app accessory or the ability to vape both flour and concentrate with a single device.

The Hydrology9 is not most products. A hefty handful of sleek tech, this vaporizer from Cloudious9 isn’t meant to travel in your pocket. It can be a centerpiece for your coffee table, the go-to when entertaining guests, or a bedside companion that is likely to fire most competitors as your new favorite. It all comes down to two simple things that the Hydrology9 does better than the rest: aesthetics and filtration.

On the first point: this vape looks beautiful. From the LED lights that go through five temperature settings – giving the look of a portable lava lamp – to the aluminum alloy housing of spacecraft, this baby is a sight to behold. One issue often plagued by the more high-end options in the vaporizer market is durability, but no worries here.

When you first take apart your Hydrology9 you may feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of parts, but fear not! The design here is actually quite simple, with a bottom piece that can be unscrewed to access the flower loading chamber (this vape is for solid material only). That a hook is built into the bottom to pack or dig out the room is just one of the many reasons this device is a marvel of innovation.

The other reason is the burden of proof for the name of the evaporator: the Hydrology9 contains a water filtration component. Anyone who has hit a bong or bubbler knows what adding water to the mix does. It cools the smoke – or, in this case, vapor – and allows for smoother inhalation. Part of the appeal of vaping was primarily that vaporized cannabis is much less harsh on the lungs than smoke, but with water it is now buttery smooth. While this reviewer can’t confirm Cloudious9’s claim that the Hydrology9’s “Tunnel Tube” also lowers intakes of carcinogens, it makes sense that running vapor through water probably filters out at least some toxins.

Practically speaking, the Hydrology9 is beautiful. After using it several times I found the middle of the five temperature edits to produce the ideal hit, but it’s always nice to have options depending on how much vapor you want to draw. After filling the water chamber, there were no signs of leakage, even when the unit was turned upside down, left to one side, or gently pushed back and forth. It takes a while to reach the desired temperature, but a smart system of LED lights makes it easy to track when the vape is ready to use. The room is also quite small, but experience tells us that the ideal session requires fresh flowers, so reloading is hardly a major inconvenience.

While it’s hard to imagine taking the Hydrology9 with you, the device comes with an optional leather carrying case that’s both modest and elegant. Cloudious9 also offers a number of specific replacement elements, from the borosilicate glass cylinder barrel to the rotating stirrer cover, meaning that if a part breaks or wears out, you’re not on the hook to replace the entire unit.

This vaporizer costs $249.99 and is one of the more expensive options on the market. The fact that it seems to be worth every penny is really all you need to know. The Hydrology9 won’t be for everyone, but if you’re someone who likes quality over convenience and cannabis accessories that lean closer to iPhones than blunt wraps then look no further.
