Hemp farming has been legal in Australia since 2016. Hemp seeds were then authorized as grain crops for human consumption as food in 2017. Meanwhile, the use of marijuana remains illegal.
Now, the nation’s main legalization group has developed a new phase in its campaign for greater cannabis freedom. To update its approach, membership in the Party for the Prohibition of Marijuana (HEMP) will consider a formal proposal to change its name to “Legalize Cannabis” (using the British spelling of the word) in its general assembly of 9/11.
“We want to be clear about what we are about and call it as there is no possibility of confusion,” said Michael Balderstone, president of the HEMP Party. “Cannabis is already legal in Australia and more than 70 per cent of our members support the name change in the two surveys we have done.
The strategy is to expand into every state
“Another reason for the change is to unite the cannabis community across our large, brown land, where we seek to register Legalize Cannabis Parties in every Australian state,” Balderstone continued. “We were inspired by the election of two members of parliament to Legalize Cannabis WA Party in Western Australia, the registration of Legalize Cannabis Qld Party and the good results they have achieved.”
“Along with the new name comes a new determination to see the end of the ban.” We will commit to getting candidates elected to the Senate and we will also present candidates in some of the lower house seats for the first time. To achieve this, we need funding and volunteers to help with the campaign. We need our grassroots supporters to launch and donate all the time and money they can afford to help raise the funds needed to pay the AEC application fees for our candidates. ”
“With the growing awareness of Cannabis as a medicine, the reaction of many patients on the discriminatory nature of Medical Cannabis policy plus the ridiculous street drug testing for just the presence of THC, we believe we can attract more of the 4% of the primary vote. – especially when you include the votes of those participating in recreational therapy. ”
Looking past ban on wine model
“Marijuana is a word coined by prohibitionists in America in the 1930s to deceive farmers, who did not understand that banning marijuana had also criminalized industrial cannabis farming. Thousands of cannabis growers were made illegal overnight by the introduction of the law. Confirmed interests have criminalized cannabis then, as they maintain its illegality now. ”
“How come we have the same rules as alcohol where adults can make their own but you need a license to sell?”
“Cruelty to the RDT and the police jumping at every movement to change laws – as we saw in Victoria – has galvanized new energy into the movement. There is a push to unite our legal reform movement across the country. Anyone is registered to vote can help by joining his state party at legalisecannabis.org.au, ”Balderstone, chairman of the Australian HEMP party, told the Nimbin HEMP embassy.
